New Zealand Retail Card Spending Rises the Most in Nearly 2 Years
New Zealand electronic retail card spending rose 2.6 percent from a month earlier to NZD 5.86 billion in November 2019, rebounding from a downwardly revised 0.5 percent fall in October and above market expectations of a 0.5 percent gain. It was the biggest increase since January 2017, amid Black Friday and Singles Day sales promotions. Spending increased for consumables, including groceries and liquor (1.4 percent from -0.5 percent in October); durables, including hardware, appliances, department stores, and pharmaceuticals (5.4 percent from -0.8 percent); apparel (1.8 percent from -0.8 percent); and vehicles (1.4 percent from -1 percent). Also, spending advanced further in hospitality (1.4 percent from 0.1 percent); while fuel purchases eased (0.9 percent from 1.1 percent). Year-on-year, electronic retail card spending went up 5.1 percent, after a 1.6 percent rise and beating market forecasts of a 1.5 percent gain.

New Zealand Retail Card Spending Falls in October
New Zealand electronic retail card spending decreased 0.6 percent from a month earlier to NZD 5.70 billion in October 2019, after a downwardly revised 0.2 percent rise in the previous month and compared with market expectations of a flat reading. It was the first fall in electronic retail card spending since May. Spending fell for consumables, including groceries and liquor (-0.5 percent vs 0.7 percent in September); durables, including hardware, appliances, department stores, and pharmaceuticals (-0.8 percent vs flat reading); apparel (-0.8 percent vs -4.1 percent) and vehicles (-1 percet vs -0.1 percent). On the other hand, fuel purchases increased 0.7 percent, rebounding from a 0.4 percent drop. Core retail spending (excluding vehicle-related industries) slipped 0.6 percent, following a 0.4 percent advance in September. Year-on-year, electronic retail card spending rose 1.6 percent, above an upwardly 0.6 percent gain in the prior month but missing market consensus of 2.2 percent.

New Zealand Retail Card Spending Rises Less than Expected
New Zealand electronic retail card spending rose 0.4 percent from a month earlier to NZD 5.59 billion in September 2019, easing from an upwardly revised 1.2 percent gain in the previous month and below market expectations of a 0.5 percent increase. Spending went up across three out of the six retail industries: consumables, including groceries and liquor, (up 0.8 percent); durables, including electronics, hardware, furniture, and appliances (up 0.4 percent); and hospitality, (up 0.4 percent). Meanwhile, fuel purchases dropped 0.6 percent; and spending on apparel declined 4 percent. Core retail spending (excluding vehicle-related industries) increased 0.6 percent, slowing from an upwardly revised 1.4 percent in August. On a quarterly basis, electronic retail card spending advanced 0.8 percent in the three months to September 2019, after a 0.2 percent gain in the prior period.

New Zealand Retail Card Spending Bounces Back
New Zealand electronic retail card spending rose 1.1 percent from a month earlier to NZD 5.56 billion in August 2019, after being unchanged in July. Spending rose across five of the six retail industries: durables, including hardware, furniture, and appliances (up 1.7 percent); consumables, including groceries and liquor, (up 0.8 percent); hospitality, (up 1.5 percent); apparel (up 4.5 percent); and vehicles (up 4.4 percent). In contrast, fuel purchases were down 1.4 percent. Core retail spending (excluding vehicle-related industries) advanced 1.3 percent in August, after a 0.4 percent fall in July.
