Canada Q2 Capacity Utilization at 1-Year High
Canadian industries operated at 83.3 percent of their production capacity in the second quarter of 2019, above an upwardly revised 81.1 percent in the previous quarter and hitting its highest level in a year. It compares with market expectations of 81.8 percent. Higher capacity utilization in mining and quarrying, oil and gas extraction (+4.9pp to 84.8%), the largest gain recorded since Q2 2006; manufacturing (+1.8pp to 80.3%); and forestry and logging (+0.5pp to 77.8%) more than offset decreases in electric power generation, transmission and distribution (-1.5pp to 84.6%).

Canada Q1 Capacity Utilization Falls The Most Since 2017
Canadian industries operated at 80.9 percent of their production capacity in the first quarter 2019, down from an upwardly revised 81.8 percent in the previous quarter and hitting its lowest level since the first quarter of 2017. It compares with market expectations of 81 percent. The decrease in the first quarter was mainly attributed to declines in the mining & quarrying industry (-4.3pp to 72.6%); oil and gas extraction (-1.3pp to 82.9%) and in the manufacturing sector (-0.9pp to 78.2%). In contrast, capacity utilization rose in the electric power generation, transmission & distribution industry (0.4pp to 86.2%) and among petroleum & coal product manufacturers (8.6pp to 86.3%).

Canada Capacity Utilization Lowest in 1-1/2-Year
Canadian industries operated at 81.7 percent of their production capacity in the fourth quarter of 2018, down from an upwardly revised 82.8 percent in the third quarter. This was the second consecutive quarterly decline, below market expectations of 81.9 percent. Lower capacity utilization in manufacturing, construction, mining and quarrying, and forestry and logging more than offset increases in electric power generation, transmission and distribution, and oil and gas extraction. The average capacity utilization rate of Canadian industries rose 1.2 percentage points to 82.8% in 2018, after increasing 2.4 percentage points in 2017, mainly due to a rebound in the oil and gas extraction subsector in the first half of the year.
