Brunei Inflation Rate at 2.50 percent


The annual inflation rate in Brunei rose to 2.5 percent in May 2020 from 1.9 percent in the previous month. This was the highest inflation rate since October 2011, with prices of food & non-alcoholic beverages rising the most since April 2012 (3.6% vs 3% in April), led by meat (2.7%), milk, dairy, eggs (2.2%) and vegetables (18.1%). Also, transport cost rebounded (2% vs -0.2%) on the back of further rises in prices of housing & utilities (0.03% vs 0.01%, miscellaneous goods & services (11.7% vs 10.9%), furnishings, household maintenance (2.9% vs 3.3%), education (2% vs 2%), recreation & culture (0.1% vs 0.3%), clothing (4.7% vs 5.6%), and health (0.7% vs 0.6%). In contrast, cost of restaurants & hotels dropped more (-0.4% vs -0.3%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell by 0.2 percent, the first monthly drop since November 2019, after a 0.2 percent gain in April.

Imports to Brunei dropped by 1.2 percent year-on-year to BND 416.4 million in April 2020, largely driven by machinery and transport equipment (-26.6 percent), manufactured goods (-40.4 percent), and food (-34.5 percent). The highest share of imports came from China, followed by the US, Singapore, and Malaysia.
